Nouska is a beautiful black Canadian Timber Wolf. She was born at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in Kent and reared by her natural parents in a large enclosure. Early in 1997, aged 4 years, Nouska was involved in a dominance fight with another member of her pack. As a result, she was temporarily separated and shared an enclosure with an African Wild Dog.
It was relatively soon after this point that she was re-homed with Wolf Watch. Although strongly built and in superb condition, she is a shy animal and makes the best use of cover in her new enclosure if many people are close by.
Regardless of her previous set backs however, she has firmly settled herself in amongst the lower valley pack as the beta female. Despite being the oldest Wolf in her pack, she continues to appear the most active and even seems to be gaining in confidence in respect of human contact.
Visitors to the Centre have remarked that she will approach and even sniff their hands, usually after the bolder alpha Wolf, Luna has done the same. This boldness is unusual in a Wolf not socialised to people at an early age. But Nouska is obviously a Wolf of some stature, having been an Alpha female previously, she continues to demonstrate strength of character where-ever she is.
The seriousness of pack hierarchy is often punctuated by periods of sheer playfulness and Nouska is not above romping about her territory with her pack mates, splashing through their stream, leaping from the banks and charging at full pelt across the grass areas. In the heat of a summers afternoon Nouska can often be found dozing in the lower valley packs favourite sun spot, at a high point in their enclosure. Enjoying the lazy calm, a quiet observer will find them stretching amidst the grass and trees, yawning wildly and sometimes wiggling on their backs with their legs in the air, as if re-living their days as young cubs.
