Pepe
is a male Timber Wolf, born to the West Midlands Safari Park Wolf
Pack on 4th March, 2004.
Following
a dominance fight within his pack, Pepe appeared to emerge
second best, and was isolated to diffuse pack tensions
and recover from some minor injuries. For a wolf, any isolation from
its pack is problematic, in captivity this is exaggerated by the
confines of fences and close contact. Trying to decide on a pack
animals best interests between short term necessity and longer term
isolation, is an ever present problem in captivity. Particularly
relevant in a rescue scenario where this could become a permanent
situation. After some consideration by the Head of the Park, it was
thought to be in Pepes best interest not to be reinstated with
his pack.
Wolf
Watch UK was contacted to see if we could accommodate him and so
preparations were made for his arrival at the Wolf Centre.

Pepe
was released into the centres small quarter acre enclosure
sited next to Luna and Nouska. Although disorientated through
sedation during his journey to us, he soon began patrolling his new
environment, making the necessary brief enquiries with his neighbours
before scent marking the new territory. Soon afterwards he had a
quick splash in his section of the valley stream, a drink, then a
quiet rest whilst the remaining effects of the sedation wore off.
In
appearance Pepe is a handsome looking wolf with an attractive, well
marked winter coat. Weighing approximately 45 kilos, he is slightly
taller than Kgosi with a broad head, good teeth. A generally fit and
healthy animal. Having been brought up in a Safari Park, he has no
close socialisation with humans, but has a reduced flight instinct.
Close contact with him is unlikely, but with patience it is hoped
that he will continue to settle with us and his new companion Poppy.
